The PADI Advanced Open Water Diver course helps you increase your confidence and build your scuba skills so you can become more comfortable in the water. This is a great way to get more dives under your belt while continuing to learn under the supervision of your PADI Instructor. This course builds on what you’ve learned and develops new capabilities by introducing you to new activities and new ways to have fun scuba diving.
You’ll refine your skills by completing five adventure dives over at least two days that introduce you to:
- Underwater navigation
- Deeper water diving (typically anywhere from 18-30 meters)
- A sampler of three more Adventure Dives of your choice
One reason you’ll love the PADI Advanced Open Water Diver course is that you and your instructor choose from 15 types of Adventure Dives to complete your course. You can try your hand at digital underwater photography, wreck diving, diving with underwater scooters, peak performance buoyancy and much more.

What you learn
PADI’s Adventures in Diving Manual and video on DVD provide information on more than 16 types of specialty diving. You’ll use them as a guidebook to improve your diving skills and prepare for new experiences and adventures. Just like the Open Water course, when you book, Divemaster Academy will give you the course material so you can start your self-study right away and you will also be invited to our dive centre to review what you have learnt with an instructor.
Curious about night diving? Flip to the night diving chapter. Once you’ve previewed the skills, your instructor will guide you on your first night diving adventure. Having trouble with underwater navigation? Review the underwater navigation section then sign up for the Underwater Navigation Adventure Dive with your Divemaster Academy Instructor.
In addition to the knowledge reviews presented in your course material your instructor will brief you before each of your dives and discuss and demonstrate new skills.
Having completed your knowledge reviews prior to the practical section of the course and reviewed them with your instructor, you can complete the PADI Advanced Open Water Diving course over one weekend (2 days) with a total of 5 dives.
For the duration of your diving you will be in small groups with other divers under the direct supervision of your instructor. Divemaster Academy concentrates and providing first class service in a fun and stress free environment to help with your personal development.
All training dives are run in fantastic dive locations close to Divemaster Academy. Each of the dives are chosen for specific topics covered in the course. Low course ratios and experienced friendly instructors ensures that you are always in good safe hands.
During the course you will make two CORE dives: Navigation and a Deep dive.
Navigation: You will do a navigation dive to expand your underwater navigation skills, which were only touched on during your Open Water Course. This part of the course starts off with you walking on the beach with your compass. This will allow you to become confident and familiar with your compass and taking bearings, turns and contours. You will then use these skills during your dive and follow an underwater route using your compass and natural navigation to return to the desired spot. Harder than it sounds!!
Deep Dive: The second core topic is the Deep dive. During this part of the course you will learn about the considerations of deep diving and planning. Your instructor will also brief you on Nitrogen Narcosis and you will perform a test to identify Nitrogen Narcosis on the surface and then during your dive with your instructor.
Added to these two you can then choose three more dives from these options:
- AWARE Fish ID
- Digital Underwater Imaging
- Diver Propulsion Vehicle
- Enriched Air (15yrs and older)
- Multi level and computer
- Peak Performance Buoyancy
- Search and Recovery
- Underwater Naturalist
- Underwater Navigation
